Community Development

Flinders Council supports the young people of Flinders Island with its youth programs and supported services.

Working closely with our youth we aim to establish identified needs and provide programs that support, develop and engage the young people though out the region.

Youth Programs include Transition; Health and Well being; Youth Club & School Holiday Programs and a Summer Surf Program.

Current Projects

School Holiday Program: 19 April - 5 May, 2013

FREE Drumming Workshops with Jon Hizzard for 7 years +

The workshops will focus on West African rhythms, technique syncopation, and history behind the style. Workshops of this kind are terrific for team building, whole brain function, and are a fun, dynamic activity.

When: 2:00 – 3:00pm on the days Tuesday 23 April; Wednesday 24 April; Tuesday 30 April; Wednesday 1 May.

FREE YOUTH CLUB SURF SCHOOL with Andrew Cole & Chris Macqueen for 12 years +

Whether you have never surfed before, a beginner or an accomplished ‘grommet’, register for our holiday surf program. Dates, times and locations will vary pending on the swell and weather. You will need to bring your own wetsuit and towel however, we have surfboards and sunscreen. Each session will be for one hour duration. Please note that participants will need their own transport.

2013 Summer Surf Program:

An initiative created by Flinders Council, this program is offered during the summer months and has now grown to offer surf lessons to children from age 7-25 years.

Local surf coaches enable the program to be sustainable with visitors and locals welcome to join.

Transition Program

This program supports young people as they transition from being high school leavers into further education and employment.

Support, building resilience and focusing on life skills aims to build confidence and self esteem as they progress into being young adults.

Providing assistance to students who leave the Island is a large focus of the program.

Youth Club & School Holiday Programs

Youth club is held every 2-3 weeks and includes movie nights, games nights, eating out, pizza & pool nights and a variety of sports, transport is often provided.

During the school holidays Youth Club activities are run to provide students (both living on the Island and returning for holidays) a chance to reconnect and participate in physical activity, team building games and challenges. 

Health and Well Being Program

This program aims to support young people with health and youth services both local and in the Launceston region.

Its focus is on physical, social and emotional health with areas being addresses such as mental health, party safe, sexual health and social support.
