Community Gyms

Gym Update - March 2025
Flinders Council is excited to announce that we have been successful in securing a Healthy Focus Grant through the Healthy Tasmania Fund! This funding will support the Flinders SafeFit Zone project, designed to make our community gyms safer, more accessible, and easier to use for everyone.
As part of this project, Council has recently upgraded the locking systems at the Lady Barron Hall and Gym and the Whitemark Gym. These upgrades allows better managed access, ensuring all users have completed their induction and paid their membership.
Through the community survey conducted in September 2024, we heard from many gym users (along with potential news users) that they would like the option to work out without needing a buddy. Thanks to this grant, we will be installing cameras in both gyms, allowing inducted members to access the facilities independently between 5 am and 10 pm.
Prioritising Safety
To ensure the safety of all gym users:
- Anyone using the gym alone will be required to wear a lanyard with a duress button.
- If the button is pressed, a contracted security operator will check the camera footage and, if necessary, contact emergency services or a Council staff member.
- Additional duress buttons will also be installed in the toilets for extra security.
We extend a huge thank you to Healthy Tasmanian and Minister for Mental Health and Wellbeing, Roger Jaensch, and the Tasmanian Government for supporting initiatives that help make health and fitness more accessible for our community.
Stay tuned for further updates!
