“The Planning Scheme affects every landowner – this is a rare opportunity for landowners and residents.”
The first draft of the Interim Planning Scheme for the Flinders Municipality was endorsed at the November Council Meeting and approved to go out to the community for informal consultation.
The State Government’s Planning Reform process that commenced in late 2008, requires all Councils to produce new planning schemes, based on the State designed template. The eight Northern Councils and Northern Tasmanian Development (NTD) have worked collaboratively to produce schemes that are uniform across the Region and cater for the uniqueness of each Municipality.
To ensure this Municipality’s communities are adequately informed of the process and proposed changes to land zoning, Council will hold informal community discussion sessions as per the table below.
New zones, common to all Municipalities, are mandated by the Planning Reform process and although most do not adversely affect the existing rights that property owners have under the current Planning Scheme, much of the land in the Municipality will come under new zonings and landowners are encouraged to read the draft scheme provisions and discuss any concerns with staff at the Information sessions.

Council Officers will be available at informal information sessions to discuss the draft scheme and take enquiries in regard to the new Planning Scheme. Fact sheets on the proposed zones and process towards a new scheme will be available at these sessions, on Council’s website or from the Council Office.
This is an informal period of public consultation that will result in changes to the draft where appropriate. Whilst every endeavour has been made by Staff and Councillors to get this draft right, we are aware that there will be information and views that you the community have that might not be reflected within the draft and we encourage your input at this time for consideration.
The development of a new Planning Scheme for the Municipality has required a major investment of time by Staff and Councillors. Input from the community is now vital to ensure this important document can be finalised and all interested parties are encouraged to make submissions during this informal consultation process.
Submissions can be made in writing addressed to the General Manager, Flinders Council:
