A beautifully preserved certificate dated Feb1900 was recently found tucked away at the Flinders Council Works Depot. It recognises Ex-Councillor J.H. Furneaux of South Yarra, presented by the City of Prahran for his service in local government.

Despite being 124 years old, it’s in near-perfect condition — a real treasure!

The Certificate Reads:

CITY OF PRAHRAN
To Ex-Councillor J.H. Furneaux
South Yarra

Dear Sir,
We desire on behalf of the City Council of Prahran, to convey to you the sincere regret of the Members of that Body, that you have found it necessary owing to your appointment as Secretary of the Prahran Mechanics Institute, to resign your position as a Councillor representing the South Yarra Ward.

The Council has recorded in its minutes, and we now beg to express to you its hearty appreciation of the interest, energy, and unselfish services which you have at all times displayed, during the Seven Years you have occupied a Seat at the Council Table, and to thank you in the name of the Citizens, for the valuable services rendered in the interests of the Municipality and for the benefit of the Ratepayers.

We cordially congratulate the Committee of Management, upon their selection of you for the important Position of Secretary, feeling assured as we do that under your administration  Institute will become as it was intended to be, a source of instruction to the Citizen and a credit to the City.

We trust that you and Mrs. Furneaux may have a long and happy life together, and that you still continue to take an active interest in all matters affecting the welfare of Prahran.
