DOG OWNER'S INFORMATIONDog is man's best friend but we want to make sure he is every body's best friend too. The moment you take delivery of your dog, you take on an extra responsibility, both in duty of care and in law. The Dog Control Act, 2000 and Regulations details all the requirements for the keeping and behaviour of dogs. Dog Registration
All dogs in the Flinders Municipality must be registered.
You are required to register your dog once it reaches the age of six months.
If you are bringing a dog from outside Tasmania, please make sure that it complies with Tasmania's hydatids regulations.
To register your dog in the Flinders Municipality, please:

- Fill in the details
- Send the completed form, with your payment, to:

Kennel Licence
Who Must Apply?
It is necessary to apply for a 'licence to keep dogs' if:

You have more than two dogs over the age of six months; or
-
You have more than four working dogs over the age of six months. A working dog is a dog which is used principally for the droving or tendering of stock.
What will it cost?

An application for a licence will cost $45.00. This includes advertising in The Island News.

You will still be required to register the dog, which is used principally for the droving or tendering of stock.
Will I need Planning Approval?
What about construction of kennels?

If you are building kennels it may be necessary to obtain a building permit. Council's Building Inspectors will help you with this. The minimum specifications for construction of dog kennels and yards is attached. (

How do I go about applying?
What happens next?

There is a 14 day period during which any person living within 200 metres of the premises may object to the granting of the licence. This period starts from the day the advertisement appears.

Three weeks after the advertisement has appeared your application will be considered and a decision made.

If your application is approved a 'licence to keep dogs' will then be issued and sent to you.
How long is a 'licence to keep dogs' valid for?

A 'licence to keep dogs' is valid for a 12 month period expiring 30th June each year.

At that time you need to make an application to Council for renewal of your licence.

A 'licence to keep dogs' is renewable for a period of up to 12 months. A payment of $22.00 must be paid when you apply for renewal
