Natural Resource Management (NRM) describes the sustainable management of our natural resources (our land, water, marine and biological systems). The sustainable management of natural resources is vital if we are to ensure our ongoing social, economic and environmental wellbeing.
The Furneaux Group is blessed with a truly beautiful and unique natural environment. A wide diversity of landforms, from towering mountains to tiny windswept islands contain a wide range of habitats, communities and species. It is a unique place as it is the southern-most extent of some mainland Australian species while being the northern-most extent of some Tasmanian species. The Furneaux Group is also very important for migratory bird species, perhaps most famously for Mutton Birds (Short Tailed Shearwaters).
NRM Activities
NRM activities are done by a whole range of individuals and groups. These groups include Flinders Landcare, Farmer Groups, Individual Landholders, Flinders Island Lions Club, Progress Associations, Friends Groups and Local and State Government Agencies.
To aid the implementation of NRM activities the Flinders Council in conjunction with NRM North (http://www.nrmtas.org/regions/north/vision.shtml) has appointed an NRM Facilitator. The Facilitator assists the implementation of NRM activities by assisting with funding applications, coordinating projects, providing technical advice and running public education activities. One of the key activities recently undertaken was to draft the Furneaux Natural Resource Management Strategy. This strategy identifies all the important Natural assets of the Furneaux Group and the key management actions that are needed to effectively manage them.
