Community Recycling Hub
As we mark the one-year anniversary of the Flinders Island Community Recycling Hub, we’re thrilled to share the incredible impact the community has made. Since its launch on 20th September 2023, the hub has collected an impressive 225.6 kilograms of eligible products, helping divert hard-to-recycle items from landfill.
Household batteries have been the top performer, with 73.6 kilograms collected — a fantastic result, as batteries are not only harmful to the environment when landfilled but also contain valuable resources that can be recycled. Coffee pods came in second, with 52.4 kilograms collected, followed by printer cartridges at 31.7 kilograms and skincare products at 14.4 kilograms.
The Community Recycling Hubs focus on items that are difficult to recycle through typical facilities, and while we’re still working towards expanding our recycling capabilities for everyday items, this initiative has been a great way to get the community thinking about waste reduction and resource recovery.
We now offer 17 recycling programs across the hubs at Walker’s IGA and the Whitemark Waste Facility. A huge thank you to the team at Walker’s IGA for hosting the hub and to the whole community for doing your part to reduce landfill waste. Let’s continue to make a difference together!
