 The COVIDSafe app works to slow the spread of COVID-19. Having confidence to find and contain outbreaks quickly will mean governments can ease restrictions while still keeping Australians safe.

The new COVIDSafe app is completely voluntary. Downloading the app is something you can do to protect you, your family and your community.

Why does the app ask for my mobile number?

Is my information safe?

Yes. The COVIDSafe App only asks for basic information (name, mobile number, age range and postcode) when you download it to create a unique reference code. How will my information be used?

When someone is diagnosed with COVID-19, state and territory health officials will ask them who they have been in contact with. If they have the COVIDSafe app and provide their permission, the encrypted contact information from the app will be uploaded to a highly secure information storage system and help health officials to contact people who may have been exposed to COVID-19. How is my information stored?

App user information (i.e. name, mobile number, age range and postcode) is stored in a cloud-based facility, using infrastructure located in Australia, which is classified appropriate for storage up to the ‘protected’ security level. Information about contacts is stored securely in the COVIDSafe app on your phone. Who can access my information?

No one can access the contact information in the app on your phone unless you are diagnosed with coronavirus and give permission to the public health authorities to use it. For more information visit https://www.health.gov.au/resources/apps-and-tools/covidsafe-app

Can the app track my location?

If I am told I may have been exposed to coronavirus, will I be told who the contact was?

No. When a person is found to be a close contact of someone with coronavirus, the health officials will not tell you who that person is. This is to protect their privacy. For more information visit https://www.health.gov.au/resources/apps-and-tools/covidsafe-app

How long will this app be used?

Do you need to keep your phone's Bluetooth® turned on all the time?

Yes. COVIDSafe won’t work if Bluetooth® is turned off.
