Eligible pensioners may apply for a remission of rates under the provisions of the Local Government (Rates and Charges Remissions) Act 1991 (Tas).

Eligible Pension Cards

The following concession cards qualify for a pensioner rates remission:

• Centrelink or Department of Veterans’ Affairs Pensioner Concession Card

• Centrelink Health Care Card (current Australian Government HCC)

• Department of Veterans’ Affairs Gold Card endorsed with TPI or War Widow

Please note: An Australian Government Seniors Health Care Card does not qualify the card holder for a rates remission.

Eligibility Criteria

• The applicant must be liable for rates on the property and the property must be the principal place of residence.

• In the case of joint ownership, at least one owner must meet the eligibility requirements.

• Only one remission per household is permitted each financial year.

Any pensioner who has not previously received a remission must hold one of the above concession cards dated on or before 1 July 2025.

• If your card is dated 2 July 2025 or later, you are not eligible for this financial year and will need to apply in the next financial year.

Application Process

• Please download and complete the Rates Remission Application form.

• Applications open from April 2025 and close 31 March 2026.

Automatic Renewal

Ratepayers who received a remission in the previous financial year should automatically receive a remission this year. Please check your Annual Rate Notice (issued in July) to confirm.

Eligibility for pensioner rates remission is determined by the Department of Treasury and Finance, Tasmania.
