The Flinders Island Safe Harbour project is a step closer with additional funding secured to deliver the safe, all-weather recreational marine facility.

Chief Executive Officer Anthony Donald said TasPorts had committed up to $900,000 toward the $3.6 million project for the construction and upgrade of assets within the proposed new Safe Harbour Precinct at the Port of Lady Barron.

“This investment will support Flinders Council and community to deliver its project,” he said.

“It provides TasPorts the ability to rationalise and improve infrastructure around the working port and public wharf, thus improving safety and visitor destination options for boat and yacht tourism.”

In addition to its primary responsibility to facilitate trade, Mr Donald said TasPorts was also committed to enabling industry partners and communities through reliable infrastructure, responsive to user demand.

“We look forward to working with Council to deliver this project for the benefit of the Flinders Island community,” Mr Donald said.

Mayor Rachel Summers said she was delighted that TasPorts and Council had been able to work in partnership to secure further funding.

“This additional funding will enhance the Safe Harbour Marine Facility amenities with increased benefit for our island community.”

Work on the Safe Harbour Project is due to commence late 2023 and be completed by March 2025.
