Safe Harbour Update
For the last few weeks, there has been limited activity at the project site due to the need to produce greater quantities of larger sized ‘armour rocks’ for the rock wall.
Recent work at the quarry including three blasts has produced a good quantity of the required rock sizes and work at the project has re-commenced following the return of Batchelor staff to the Island in early October.
Due to the opportunity of daylight savings and the need to catch up on the project schedule, the finish time for weekday working hours has been extended from 6.00 pm to 7.30 pm. There will be no changes to weekend hours or project activities.
It is expected there will be approximately 4 - 5 weeks of rock transport required to complete that aspect of the project.

Lady Barron Safe Harbour Taking Shape
Construction is now underway at Lady Barron, on the southern tip of Flinders Island. This week marks the start of rock deliveries, with around 550 tonnes of rock expected to arrive at the site each day as work begins on the new breakwater wall. The structure will provide essential all-weather protection for vessels navigating the often challenging waters between mainland Australia and Tasmania, creating safer marine access for our remote island community.
The breakwater is expected to take 8 to 10 weeks to complete, led by Tasmanian firm Batchelor Construction Group. It is the first major step in a project that will also deliver a floating jetty, launching ramp, parking and public accessways, all contributing to long term maritime resilience for Flinders Island.
The project is supported by a $4.5 million funding commitment from the Federal and State Governments, secured in 2019 to bring the Safe Harbour to life.
This project has strong local roots. The Lady Barron Safe Harbour Group, a passionate team of community members, kickstarted the vision by raising $3,000 to commission an initial site investigation. Their determination and local knowledge laid the foundations for what is now beginning to take shape.
Looking ahead, the site is designed to support future growth, including the potential for a 30 to 50 berth marina. Any future investment will be guided by community values, ensuring development supports local wellbeing and protects the island’s unique environment.

MONUMENTAL OCCASION: Safe Harbour Project Underway! ⚓
We’re thrilled to announce that the Lady Barron Safe Harbour Project has officially begun!
Batchelor Construction is now in possession of the construction site, located off Franklin Parade beside the TasPorts fuel storage area. The site is now closed to the public for the duration of the construction phase to ensure everyone’s safety.
Construction is due to commence next week, marking a significant milestone for the future of marine infrastructure in the Furneaux Group.
