What’s Your Vision for North East River?

The 16-hectare Council-owned site at North East River was initially established as part of the Department of Primary Industries, Parks, Water and Environment’s (DPIPWE) shack sites project, with the long-term vision of developing it into a designated camping and recreational area. Historically, the site was enjoyed by locals, providing a peaceful and scenic location for camping and nature-based activities.

 

Since its closure in 2019 due to safety concerns following a fire, the site has remained unused - but not forgotten. Now, we’re ready to imagine what comes next.

 

With funding secured, Council is ready to begin developing a masterplan of the North East River land and precinct in collaboration with Tasmanian Parks and Wildlife that balances community access with environmental protection - creating a thoughtfully designed camping and recreational space that honours the site's natural beauty and ecological importance.
