Flinders Island Community Recycling Hub

Together for a Cleaner, Greener Future

What are the Flinders Island Community Recycling Hubs?

The Flinders Island Community Recycling Hubs are central collection points where our community can responsibly dispose of hard-to-recycle items — materials that should never go in general waste bins. These hubs support specialised recycling programs for items such as:

• Household batteries
• Printer cartridges
• Blister packs
• Coffee Pods
• And more

This initiative is a practical step toward reducing waste and protecting the unique environment of Flinders Island.

Why Do We Need the Recycling Hub?

Living on a remote island brings unique challenges when it comes to waste. Transporting materials to mainland recycling facilities is both costly and complex.

Through partnerships with organisations such as TerraCycle, MobileMuster, and Close the Loop, our community can:

• Access free recycling programs
• Reduce landfill waste
• Conserve valuable resources
• Minimise pollution

Reduce, Reuse, THEN Recycle

Recycling is important — but it’s not the first step. We encourage the community to follow the 4R Approach:

1. Reduce – Buy only what you need and avoid single-use products.
2. Reuse – Repurpose or donate items instead of discarding them.
3. Recycle – Use the Community Recycling Hubs for eligible items.
4. Landfill as a Last Resort – Help protect our limited landfill space.

How Can You Get Involved?

• Practice the 4R Approach in your daily life
• Check the list of accepted items at each hub or visit: flinders.tas.gov.au/recyclinghub
• Spread the word to friends, family, and neighbours

Please note: No hub program currently accepts cardboard packaging. Programs may change over time due to corporate limits on waste collection. Thank you for your ongoing patience and commitment to resource recovery — every little bit helps!
