Welcome to Flinders Island

A place where time slows, passing cars come with a friendly wave, and more than 150 beaches wait quietly to be discovered. As locals like to say: if you arrive at a beach and someone’s already there, simply wander to the next one… it will likely be yours alone.

With a community of around 900 people, life here moves at a gentler pace, grounded in simplicity, self-reliance and care for place. Visiting Flinders Island is an invitation to slow down, plan mindfully, and tune in to the rhythms of island life. Businesses don’t open every day, hours can change with the seasons, and a little forethought goes a long way - for you, and for the community welcoming you in.

Here are a few things to keep in mind as you prepare for your stay:

  • Phone coverage on the island is provided by Telstra only. If you’ll need mobile service, organise a Telstra SIM before you arrive, as none are sold on the island.
  • Sunday trading is limited. If you arrive on a Sunday, the Lady Barron Store, Furneaux Tavern (Lady Barron), the Interstate Hotel and the Sports & RSL Club (Whitemark) are open. The Lady Barron Store stocks most essentials, and the Whitemark IGA opens as usual on Monday. With a little advance planning, you can also arrange groceries to be delivered to your accommodation or have them waiting for you at the airport.
  • North of Whitemark, there are no places to purchase fuel, food or drinks. If you’re heading north or staying in the area, please stock up beforehand so you can explore without worry.
  • Fire restrictions can change at any time. Check conditions via TAS Alert before and during your stay, and always follow local guidelines to help care for this fragile landscape.
  • Water: Potable water is available in Whitemark, at the Showgrounds, and in Lady Barron. Many BBQ sites have tank water available; however this water is untreated.
  • Rubbish and waste: Please take your rubbish with you and dispose of it thoughtfully. Waste transfer stations are open 24/7 in Lady Barron and Killiecrankie, and the Whitemark Tip operates on limited days and hours. Caring for the island means leaving places better than you found them.
  • Dining and meals: With only a small number of restaurants on the island, planning ahead is essential. Kitchens may close earlier than you’re used to, and bookings are greatly appreciated. Reserving in advance helps local businesses prepare and ensures a warm welcome when you arrive.
  • Emergencies and medical care: In an emergency, always call 000. The Flinders Island Multi-Purpose Centre in Whitemark provides emergency care, and the Ochre Medical Centre (located at the same site) offers GP services, with appointments available online or by phone.
