We are pleased to report progress on the Lady Barron Multi-Use Recreational Space project, undertaken with support from the Open Spaces Grants Program Round 1.

The site includes the former 1960s tennis courts, a large grassy area, a shed housing the Furneaux Maritime History Association’s artifacts, and essential public amenities such as toilets and showers.

The project’s goal has been to revitalise this well-used but ageing area into a vibrant, multi-purpose recreational hub that encourages active living and community connection. Works have included the installation of a new multi-functional surface suitable for both tennis and basketball, upgraded fencing, and improved public access and amenities.

All major works are now complete, with the BBQ shelter representing the final stage - the installation of a welcoming, sheltered BBQ area that will make the space even more enjoyable for families, visitors, and community groups.

All facilities will be free for public use, ensuring the space remains inclusive and accessible for everyone.

This project not only revitalises a key community space but also strengthens local wellbeing and connection - aligning perfectly with the Open Spaces Grants Program’s goal of supporting active, healthy, and resilient island communities.
